About the College

CFMC evolved from over 60 years of combined clinical experience of Dr David Johnson, Dr Andrew Lock and Ms Joanne Griffin who are the cofounders of the organisation and actively educating and treating patients in conjunction with mentoring clinicians in the spine pain rehabilitation industry. The career long exposure to countless patients with disabling spine and back pain symptoms with repeating histories of purely symptom based therapy and overt ignorance of root causation lead to the creation of the first Movement Dysfunction Clinical Model for musculoskeletal pain. Armed with a Cause-focused model of disease, Functional Movement Therapy commenced in 2015 primarily for Dr Johnsons Clinical Spinal Practice. The program was named NeuroHAB and focused on Qualitative Central Nervous System driven Motor patterns for proficient spino-pelvic movement, distinguishing it from Quantitative and secondary structural symptom focused musculoskeletal rehabilitation - generally widely available but failing to upskill Movement Proficiency and hence not effectively able to cure the disease of Movement Dysfunction.

Today existing guidelines continue to neglect a cause based model for musculoskeletal pain symptoms, in particular low back pain with a number of profile authors designating chronic back pain as “Non-Specific” and with “no patho-anatomical identifiable cause”. This of course is an absurd assertion given that by definition all epidemic and ubiquitous conditions including back pain which effects millions of Australians by definition must have a common cause. To deny this fact amounts to also denying the very problem of Back Pain in our society. A problem that the Australian Burden of Disease Studies describe as the second leading cause of disability in the country.

The failure of policy makers and musculoskeletal health organisation’s to implement the necessary paradigm shift guidelines clarified that a collaboration of Clinicians who understand Movement Proficiency to be central and fundamentally important to joint health and joint stability was the necessary step to advocate for change, optimise the standard of care and reduce the mounting pain and disability from back pain in our society.

Your collaboration alone and delivery of Functional Movement Therapy to your patients will, with physiological certainty lead superior accountable outcomes. With superior outcomes the demand for Movement Therapy and Movement Therapists will grow organically to be the first line and default rehabilitation methodology.

The most important factor that determines joint health is the way it moves.
